A ChatGPT query consumes about five times more electricity than a simple web search.

About two liters of water are necessary for cooling data centers for every kilowatt hour of energy a data center consumes. Generally, approximately half a liter of fresh water is needed to conduct between 20-50 chatbot queries.

It is estimated that GPT-3 needed about 1287 megawatt hours of electricity (enough to power about 120 U.S. homes for a year) just to train the model. That means it spent about 2574000 liters of water on cooling. In the mean time, it also generated 552 tons of carbon dioxide. And the electricity demand increases with each iteration.

One single A.I. image generation requires about as much energy as you would need to halfway charge your phone.
