Eurovision update for my comrades
May. 12th, 2024 01:08 amSo, that was Eurovision 2024. Fucking insanity. I'll recap here for the people that didn't get to watch it.
Nothing too wild went down (unfortunately). During the show, anti-Israel protesters tried to get into the stadium, but they couldn't get past the police. For some reason Greta Thunberg was there too??? Didn't know she cared for anything but the environment, but oh well.
The show appeared pretty normal. They tried editing out the hate as much as they could, which worked pretty well for when people were loudly booing and singing Europapa when Israel's artist came on stage and when she performed, but the commentators let us know that there was in fact booing, and the further ahead the show got, the less capable the EBU was at filtering out the hate. Every time Martin Österdahl spoke, the booing was so loud that you couldn't hear him over the crowd, even though he held a microphone in front of his mouth. This was particularly funny when he had to give the Netherlands' points since our point-giver refused to give the points live and we were the only country where no one else from our country took over that position. When "The Netherlands" appeared on the screen, a loud cheering erupted through the crowd, which almost instantly turned into an insanely loud boo when Österdahl started to speak to give the points.
They also couldn't really filter out the booing towards Israel after their performance, as they were only prepared to play cheering sounds when Israel was the focus point for a longer while, but every time Israel was even mentioned or if they got points, the booing started up again. You could even very audibly hear "Free Palestine!" being yelled by someone in the crowd during a quiet moment. The Israeli Public Broadcasting Corporation (also known as Kan) was met with a shit-ton of booing too. And deserved. Apparently they broke Eurovision rules, but whereas Joost Klein was disqualified for maybe doing something slightly controversial, the EBU has refused to take action against Kan, not even acknowledging it. It's really clear the EBU is sucking Israel's dick, although I'm not quite sure why.
Either way, while we're on the topic of dicks, that dickhead of an Israeli artist is apparently joining the military after the songcontest, so that she too can murder innocent people. Disgusting bitch. Oh well. Maybe she'll get herself killed. She didn't get herself the number one spot on the contest. Although she got a lot of televoter points, 323 points for some ungodly reason, it wasn't even enough to secure her a place in the top 3, because the jury hardly cared to give Israel points. Up yours, bitches!
Quite a lot of artist made statements about wanting peace, and there were also some comments in support of Joost. Estonia ended their performance by saying "Dankjewel!", which is Dutch for "Thank you!", and Nemo from Switzerland was very happy and loving whenever they received twelve points, but as soon as they received twelve points from the Netherlands, they stopped smiling and stayed rather still and quiet, which said more than any word could have. Nemo eventually ended up winning, which I think is VERY well-deserved (especially now Joost Klein wasn't in the competition anymore), and most of the other artists seemed to share that mindset, as they were being really supportive of Nemo as Nemo kept getting a lot of points. After they won, Bambi Thug from Ireland came to them and crowned them with their crown. It really was heartwarming to see, especially when Nemo kept wearing it while performing their song again.
And then that was it. Nemo sang their song again, holding their glass trophy. ...Until you could hear the sound of glass breaking. Yep, they accidentally smashed the trophy against the ground and broke it. At least, I think it was accidental. They didn't seem too upset by it, though.
I think easily the funniest thing about tonight is seeing the host Petra Mede's face with the most uncomfortable smile and hearing the annoyance in her voice after all of the booing. That, or the crowd going from cheering for the Netherlands to booing for Martin Österdahl. Aside from that, things were more calm than I expected.
I wanted Joost to win, but I think Nemo deserves the win just as much, so I'm not really upset at them winning.
And now it's past 2 am and I'm going to bed because I'm fucking exhausted. Adios.
