Holy. Shit.

So Trump got shot by a twenty-year-old in an assassination attempt at a rally of his. Trump lived. The shooter died. And so did the hope I had for the Democratic Party in the upcoming election.

When it comes to assassinations, you either do the job and kill the person, or you just make things much worse for your cause. The latter is the case now. Trump was already doing quite well in the polls (somehow), but this? This is a Democrat's nightmare.

The image Trump and especially his followers want to paint is that he's basically the second coming of Christ. And now that's been strengthened by Trump magically surviving an assassination attempt. I've seen a picture of the bullet just before impact (a photographer for the New York Times managed to capture the moment just before impact) and even I, an agnostic leftist, almost start to believe there was heavenly interference, because that was CLOSE. Christian swingvoters might see this as a sign from God and vote for him.

Secondly, this only strengthens the right's outrage over "the radical left". Republicans might be more prone to support the right to bear arms than Democrats, but trying to assassinate a political candidate doesn't exactly help their image. A lot of Republicans/conservatives have expressed their beliefs that the left is radical and dangerous. Now, the left seems no more radical and dangerous than the right, but it's hard to deny that some Democrats/leftists can get very violent too. Republicans can now use this assassination attempt to persuade swing voters to believe that the left is a violent mob they have to rise up against.

And let's not forget sympathy votes. Trump might have had ideas that hurt people everywhere, and he might've stirred up the violent Trump supporters to storm the Capitol, but his own hands are clean. So he never directly killed anyone (for as far as we know, that is), but there was an attempt to kill him. People might feel sorry for him and vote for him. Now, yes, that's a ridiculous reason to vote for someone, but let's not forget that the average person probably shouldn't be making political decisions anyway. But that's a topic for another blog, I suppose, haha.

So basically Trump now looks bad-ass and that's going to fuck over the Democratic left. Now, I worry about Project 2025, because Jesus Christ, that's quite the idea, turning the US into a dictatorship. And yes, I know Trump has shown no interest in Project 2025 itself, but that doesn't mean that he will keep disavowing it once he gains precidency. He hasn't openly spoken up about it, he just claimed he didn't know what it was. That doesn't really inspire great confidence in me that he'll reject these plans when he gets to use them to gain more political power. Now, even if he does stay away from Project 2025, I still disagree with the standpoints he himself has put forth. I wonder how many Americans will move to Europe if Trump gets elected...
